module 6 Flashcards
EPA
environmental protection agency
responsible for health surveillance and monitoring in regards to envornmental hazards, setting standards for air and water quality, evaluating envirnmental risks, screening new chemicals and establishing and evaluating and enforcing regulatory acts
what are major environmental toxins and contaminents?
arsenic - from drinking water, usually well
lead - paint, water pipes, and stain glass work
bisphenol A - used to make many plastic products
perchlorate - chemical used in fireworks, road flares, explosives, rocket fuel
how do we reduce or avoid exposure to major envirnmental toxins?
- reduce the amount of them in the environment
- reduce health and envirnmental risks and hazardous sites
- reduce the number of days people areexposed to bad air
- increase good water
- increase schools with policies and practices that promote health and safety
- increase trips to work made by mass transit
what is I PREPARE
a guide to cue the provider to ask specific questions, follow up, and provide resources
I - investigate potential exposures
P -present work
R - residence
E - envirnmental concerns
P - past work
A - activities
R - referrals and resources
E - educate
why is I PREPARE important
evironmental exposures can be overlooked by providers when diagnosing shit
taking an exposure history may enable them to:
- make more accurate diagnosis
- influence the course of disease by stopping current exposure
- prevent disease in others bu avoiding future exposure
- prompt workplace evals and protection of workers
look over air quality index pretty please
who’s involved in disaster management
- local governement: first responders
- state government: visit local officials to assist and assess, offer support, and facilitate coordination of resources and disseminate info
- federal government: prevent terrorism, ensure resilience
- FEMA: temp housing, disaster expenses, hazard mitigation
- CDC: clean water, food, shelter, medical care, often kid focused
- public health department: primary agencies for health and medical responses
- red cross: has volunteers that help with something
what are the stages of disaster management
- mitigation
- preparedness
- response
- recovery
describe mitigation
- occurs before a disaster is imminent
- actions taken to prevent or reduce the acuse, impact,a nd consequences of disasters
describe preparedness
- might include planning, training, and educational activities for events that cannot be mitigated
- authority and communication
describe response
- begins immediately after disaster incident
- evacuation or sheltering in place
- search and rescue
- disaster triage
describe recovery
- begins when the damage from the disaster has passed
- clean up and repair
- disater plan evaluated and revised
what stage of disaster management?
constructing levees or permanent barrier to control flooding
mitigation
what stage of disaster management?
families establishing a predetermined meeting place away from home
preparedness
what stage of disaster management?
installing a storm cellar to protect from tornadoes and buying flood insurance
