Module 5a: Overview of local anaesthesia Flashcards
True or false: regional anaesthesia affects more than one part of body?
False, only affects one part of the body
What 2 parts of the anaelgesic triad is affected by local anaesthesia
analgesia
muscle relaxation
Name 6 benefits of regional anaesthesia
Pre-emptive analgesia
Post-op analgesia
Haemodynamically stable (caution: neuraxial)
Rapid recovery post-op
Reduced surgical stress response
Reduced GA complications
How do you prep the patient before regional anaesthesia?
same as general prep work with full hx, exam, investigations, nill per oss, IV access
What is needed in theatre prep
Anaesthetic machine checked or ability to ventilate and give O2
Airway trolley
Defibrillator
Suction
Anaesthetic drugs
Emergency drugs
What are the 5 types of regional anaesthesia?
Topical
wound infiltration
IV regional anaesthesia of the arm(Biers block)
Peripheral nerve blocks/plexus blocks
Central nerve blocks(neuraxial block)
Name 3 examples of topical anaesthesia
Aerolised (2% lignocaine in Macintosh sprayer on vocal cords)
Topical cream
Direct application (drops)
Name and describe 2 types of wound infiltration RA?
Subcut: into wounds at end of surgery under GA-> provides postoperative analgesia, wound infusion catheters give hours of postoperative pain relief
Intradermally: suturing of wounds, local before siting large IV, central or arterial lines
What are the 3 types of peripheral nerve blockade found in GA?
Single nerve blocks: femoral, popliteal, radial etc.
Plexus block: brachial plexus block
Deep infiltration: transverse abdominus plane block
Where do you block brachial plexus in peripheral nerve block for forearm surgery?
supraclavicular
Where do you do the peripheral nerve blockade in brachial plexus for shoulder surgery
Interscalene
What do they use to guide the peripheral nerve blocks
nerve stimulation guidance
