What is the Place of religion in society?

A

Religion is multifaceted in Australia.
The place of religion in society is to examine the role it plays in society.
In doing this it is important to consider how individuals, groups and institutions such as the media and government responds to religion.

It is about religious affiliation - the numbers, different religions - it is a trend and changing over time
- affected by immigration, advancement, education, freedom, community and more spirituality.

What are the four categories in which religion plays a role and explain it. (Public Roles)

A
  • Religious: supporting people in their religious way of life
  • prayer, community groups to find support, youth groups, masses or community service
  • Social: providing a service or support to people or groups within society
  • Hospitals, schools and welfare services provided by religious groups and individuals
  • Political: promoting, explaining and supporting the beliefs and values of a religion within society
  • through leaders and members of larger originations or political parties make known the religious community eg debates or publication of documents.
  • Cultural: using art, music, literature or historical structures to give expression to how people find meaning and purpose in their life.
  • songs, art and drama forms that reflect upon or uses elements drawn from religion contributes to and shapes the culture of society.

What is a secular society?

A

A society which pushes no religion and allows people to have the freedom to believe in religion or not.
The government governs the state not the religion.

What is a pluralist society?

A

A society where different religions and cultures can coexist without major conflicts, and where minority cultures are encouraged to uphold their customs.
There is tolerance for everyone

What the catholic social justice teachings? List them.

A

They are the fundamental social doctrines upheld by the church and are expected by Christians to also maintain practice in daily life.

  1. Dignity of the human person: human life is scared and the dignity of the person is the foundation of the human society.
    “Man was made in the same image likeness of God”
  2. Call to participation in family and community: humans are not only sacred but also social and everyone has the right to participate in society: seeking together common good and well-being of all, especially the poor.
  3. Option for the poor and vulnerable: Jesus instructs to put the needs of others, the poor and the vulnerable first. Every member should experience fairness and equality
  4. Solidarity: the human race is one whole family and everyone is brothers and sisters keepers.
    ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself’. Pursuit in peace and Justice in a violent and conflict environment. Gospel = peacemakers
  5. Stewards for creation: it is human responsibility to protect and respect creation of God, living a faith life in a sustainable relationship with his people and nature.
  6. Economic and Workers Justice: the rights of workers who serve the economy, must also be served justly by the economy.
    Dignity of workers and basic human rights must be protected. No dehumanisation, fair wages and freedom to join unions.
  7. Rights and responsibilities: everyone has a right to life and it is the responsibility of others and the community to achieve human right and protection of dignity.
