What is the axon?

A

Tubelike structure that branches off from the soma, connect to & carries the messages (send messages) to other neurons.

Q

What is the myelin sheath?

A

Fatty substances produced by certain glial cells (that coat the axons of neurons to insulate protect and speed at the neural impulse)

Q

What is neurotransmitter communication?

A
  • Electrical impulse that goes through all different neurons to send a message.
  • chemical found in the synaptic vessicle that when released has an effect on the next cell.

Q

What is a synapse(synaptic gap)?

A

Microscopic fluid filled space between the synaptic knob of one cells and the dendrites or surface wall of the next cell.

Also between the axon of one neuron and dendrites of another.

15
Q

What is the somatic nervous system?

A

Division of the peripheral nervous system, consisting of nerves that carry information from the senses of the CNS to the voluntary muscles of the body.

16
Q

What is the autonomic nervous system?

A

Division of the peripheral nervous system consisting of nerves that control all the involuntary muscles, organs, and glands.

17
Q

What is the parasympathetic nervous system?

A

Part of the atomic nervous system that restores the body to normal functioning after arousal and is responsible for day-to-day functioning of the organs and glands.

Ex: breathing regular , heart rate, daily functions.

18
Q

What is a sympathetic nervous system?

A

Part of the atomic nervous system that is responsible for reacting to stressful events and bodily arousal.

Ex: fight or flight, stressed response, (evolutionary adaptive)
