Module 5 - Building Components Flashcards
Typical stud spacing
16” or 24” on center
Typical sizes of wood studs
2x4 and 2x6 (nominal dimensions)
typically used for residential
Typical size of metal studs
2 1/2” set into metal channels on ceiling and floor
most common in commercial spaces
Size of gyp boards
most common is 4’x8’
Other common sizes include 4’x9’, 4’x10’, and 4’x12’
Mechanical systems include
heating and cooling , plumbing, fire protection and electrical systems
Plenum
The space between the ceiling and the structural floor above is used as a passage for ductwork, piping, wiring, and return air space.
Building codes limit the use of combustible and hazardous materials in the plenum.
VAV
variable air volume (as opposed to constant air volume, CAV)
With variable air volume systems, the VAV box varies the quantity of air. One duct leads in and one or more lead out and is attached to registers mounted in the ceiling. A VAV box is placed in the plenum near the space it serves.
