Prior learning - can be brought into awareness at any time.
Unconscious
According to Freud, where most of your unacceptable thoughts, wishes, feelings, and memories are stored.
Id
Strives to satisfy basic sexual and aggressive drives.
Superego
A part of personality that presents internalized ideals
Ego
Operates in reality to satisfy the wants and desires of the Superego and Id while obeying the rules of the real world
Oedipus complex
A boy’s sexual desires towards his mother and feelings of jealousy and hatred for the rival father.
Fixation
A lingering focus on pleasure-seeking energies
Defense mechanisms
The ego’s protective methods of reducing anxiety by unconsciously distorting reality
Repression
the basic defense mechanism that gets rid of thoughts that cause stress
Regression
defense mechanism used when someone has anxiety to return to an infantile state like sucking your thumb
Denial
Refusal to accept reality or a fact as if it doesn’t exist.
Displacement
Throwing your feelings on a safer object or person
Sublimation
Converting socially unacceptable impulses into acceptable ones
