Module 4 Flashcards
Learning
Almost permanent change in an organism’s behavior due to an experience
Three types of learning
Classical, Operant, and Observational
Classical conditioning
An organism starts associating two stimuli
Unconditioned stimulus (UCS)
a stimulus that naturally triggers a stimulus
Unconditioned response (UCR)
A natural response to an unconditioned stimulus
Conditioned stimulus (CS)
Originally irrelevant but when classically conditioned elicits a conditioned response (CR)
Conditioned response (CR)
a learned response to a previously neutral stimulus
Acquisition
The first stage in classical conditioning; when a neutral stimulus is paired with an unconditioned stimulus so that the neutral stimulus triggers a conditioned response
Extinction
Diminishing of a CR, when the UCS does not follow a CS
Spontaneous recovery
reappearance of a previously extinct CR
Generalization
The tendency for similar stimuli to a CS to trigger the same response
Discrimination
The learned ability to differentiate a CS and other stimuli that do not signal a UCS
Operant conditioning
A type of learning where certain behaviors are strengthened by reinforcement or diminished by punishment
