Module 5 Flashcards

1
Q

what does a statistically significant result mean?

A

that the sample mean is different from the population mean

this is based on probability - you can’t see reality

Q

type I error

A

false positive

rejecting the null when the null is in fact true

probability of alpha, which is typically .05

this happends too frequently in science

A

the probability that a test is going to find a legitimate result

we usually set this at 80%

Q

statistical power

1 - B

A

the probability of rejecting the null when you should

it’s when you find a difference between means and one actually exists in reality

things that effect power:
1. sample size - the greater the sample size, the greater the power
2. directional/
3. higher alpha is higher power (.01 is greater than .05)
4. intensity of experimental manipulation
