module 5 Flashcards
1
Q
Gas exchange
A
- controlled by physical factors
- fick’s law: rate of diffusion = SA x partial pressure gradient x diffusion coefficient / diffusion distance
2
Q
Gas exchange in human lungs
A
1.
3
Q
Explain sex determination in human
A
- determined by the SRY gene which is present on the Y sex chromosome
- in early embryonic development there are bi-potential gonads (indifferent)
- if SRY gene is present, testes develop
- if SRY gene is absent, ovaries develop
- to be a female you dont need to be XX
4
Q
What are the 3 major steroid sex hormones produced by the gonads
A
androgen (testerone), oestrogens (oestradiol), profesterone
female and male produce all but at different quantities
5
Q
Folliculogenesis
A
development of the follicle (included egg, fluid accumulation, theca cells and granulosa cells) which prepares the egg for ovulation and fertilisation
6
Q
oogenesis
A
formation of a mature ovum from the oogonia
oogonium (2n) –> primary oocyte (2n) –> secondary oocyte (n)–> ootid (n) –> ovum (egg)(n)
