The Conscious
consist of memories and thoughts that are not currently in our conscious awareness but can be easily accessed if needed
The Preconscious
still exert a powerful influence on our behavior this elements often include repressed memories, hidden fears and unresolved conflicts
the Unconscious
most basic and primal part of the personality present from birth the driven by the pleasure principle
the ID
operates the reality principle, satisfy the id’s desires in realistic and socially appropriate manner
THE EGO
it represent the internalized and strive for perfection this is responsible for the feelings of guilt
THE SUPEREGO
pushing distressing or unacceptable thoughts into the unconscious mind
repression
refusing to accept reality or facts there by blocking external events from awareness
DENIAL
it allows individual to deny their own undesirable traits by seeing them in others instead
Projection
this allows the individuals to express their feelings, but in a way that avoids direct confrontation
Displacement
creating logical or socially acceptable explanation
Rationalization
considers one of the most mature defense mechanisms because it transform negative energy into positive outcomes
Sublimation
allows the individual to keep their true feelings hidden by exaggerating the opposite feelings
Reaction formation
often occurs as a way of seeking comfort in familiar behaviors from childhood
Regression
the individuals avoids dealings with the underlying emotions
Intellectualization
engaging in a behavior meant to make amends or erase the anxiety caused by the original behavior
Undoing
infant’s primary source of interaction occurs through the mouth
Oral stage
the focus shifts to toilet training , the way parents handle toilet training can lead to different outcome
Anal stage
begin to identify with their same-sex parents while developing sexual feelings for the opposite-sex parents
Phallic stage
Sexual impulses are suppressed as children focus on social interactions and
learning.
Latency Stage
Sexual interest reawakens, leading to mature romantic relationships
