Election of 1800
Resulted in the first peaceful transfer of power between the political parties in American History. Was decided by a contingent election in the U.S. House of Representatives. Resulted in the passage and ratification of the 12th Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Election of 1824
Was decided by a contingent election in the U.S. House of Representatives. Fractured the Democratic Republican beyond repair and led to the establishment of the Democratic party and Whig Party. Helped bring an end to the “Era of Good Feelings”.

The result of the British agitating and supporting Native Americans such as the Red Sticks and Tecumseh’s confederacy in the west, British impressment of U.S. sailors, and a strong sense of American nationalism. Resulted in a period of intense nationalism called the “Era of Good Feelings.”
McCulloch v. Maryland
Affirmed the supremacy of the federal government over that of the individual states when the latter acted within its constitutional authority.
Monroe Doctrine
Established by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision of Marbury v. Madison. Warned European powers that the U.S. would consider their attempts to spread their influence as dangerous to its peace and safety.
Transcontinental Treaty:
Established the United States’ borders with Spain to include Florida and territory extending to the Pacific Ocean.
Hartford Convention
Resulted in the collapse of the Federalist party on the national level of politics.
American System
Stressed high tariffs, a national bank, and internal improvements as means by which the United States could become economically independent from Europe.
Battle of New Orleans
Prevented a British attempt to seize control of the Mississippi River in 1815, and propelled General Andrew Jackson to the presidency in the 1820’s.
Louisiana Purchase
Secured the United States’ full control of the Mississippi River by eliminating a potential threat on its western border.
