Module 4 - Safety Labs Procedures and Proper Use of Tools Flashcards
A safe workspace is…
Clean, Organized, Properly Lit
(True or False) Some printer components retain a high voltage even after the printer is turned off.
True
(True or False) Electrical devices have certain power requirements.
True
(True or False) Exchanging AC adapters with a different type of laptop or device will not cause damage to either AC adapter or the laptop.
False, it will damage both.
P-A-S-S, the basic rules of fire extinguisher operation means…
P - Pull the pin
A - Aim at the base of the fire, not at the flames
S - Squeeze the lever
S - Sweep the nozzle from side to side
This can occur when there is a build up of a static electricity charge that exists on a surface which comes into contact with another, differently charged surface. This can cause damage to computer equipment if not discharged properly.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
(True or False) Less than 30 volts of static electricity can damage a computer component.
True
It is the intrusion of outside electromagnetic signals in a transmission media, such as copper cabling. In a network environment, this distorts the signals so that the receiving devices have difficulty interpreting them.
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)
Possible sources of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI):
Any source designed to generate electromagnetic energy
Man-made sources like power lines or motors
Natural events such as electrical storms, solar and interstellar radiations
It is caused by radio transmitters and other devices transmitting in the same frequency. Wireless networks are affected by this.
Radio Frequency Interference (RFI)
(True or False) If the humidity level is very low, the chance of ESD decreases.
False, it increases.
(True or False) If the humidity level is very high, equipment won’t suffer from moisture damage.
False, they will be damaged.
It is the measure of energy required to move a charge from one location to another.
Voltage
The movement of electrons.
Current
(True or False) Unsteady voltages are called power flunctuations.
True
Complete loss of AC power. A blown fuse, damaged transformer, or downed power line can cause this.
Blackout
Reduced voltage level of AC power that lasts for a period of time. This occur when the power line voltage drops below 80 percent of the normal voltage level and when electrical circuits are overloaded.
Brownout
Interference from generators and lightning that results in poor quality power, which can cause errors in a computer system.
Noise
Sudden increase in voltage that lasts for a short period and exceeds 100 percent of the normal voltage on a line. This can be caused by lightning strikes, but can also occur when the electrical system comes back on after a blackout.
Spike
Dramatic increase in voltage above the normal flow of electrical current that can last for a few nanoseconds.
Power Surge
Helps protect against damage from surges and spikes by diverting extra electrical voltage that is on the line to the ground.
Surge Suppressor
Helps protect against potential electrical power problems by supplying a consistent level of electrical power to a computer or other device. The battery is constantly recharging while this is in use. It provides a consistent quality of power when brownouts and blackouts occur.
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
Helps protect against potential electrical power problems by providing a backup battery to supply power when the incoming voltage drops below the normal level. The battery is on standby during normal operation. When the voltage decreases, the battery provides DC power to a power inverter, which converts it to AC power for the computer. This device is not as reliable as a UPS because of the time it takes to switch over to the battery. If the switching device fails, the battery cannot supply power to the computer.
Standby Power Supply (SPS)
A fact sheet that summarizes information about material identification, chemical reactivity and incompatibility information.
Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
Contains rare earth metals that can be harmful to the environment. These can contain lead, cadmium, lithium, and other heavy metals.
Batteries
Four categories of Hardware Tools:
ESD Tools
Hand Tools
Cleaning Tools
Diagnostic tools
Two ESD tools:
Antistatic Wrist Strap
Antistatic Mat
This ESD tool protects computer equipment when grounded to a computer chassis.
Antistatic Wrist Strap
This ESD tool protects computer equipment by preventing static electricity from accumulating on the hardware or on the technician.
Antistatic Mat
A device that can take many types of measurements.
Digital Multimeter
This tests the basic functionality of computer ports.
Loopback Adapter
Initializes disks, creates partitions, and formats partitions.
Disk Management
Prepares a hard drive to store information.
Format
Checks the integrity of files and folders on a hard drive by scanning the file system. These tools might also check the disk surface for physical errors
Scandisk or CHKDSK
Previously known as Defrag, optimizes space on a hard drive to allow faster access to programs and data.
Optimize Drives
Clears space on a hard drive by searching for files that can be safely deleted.
Disk Cleanup
Scans the operating system’s critical files and replaces files that are corrupt.
System File Checker (SFC)
Checks the status of essential security settings.
Windows Action Center
Protects against viruses and spyware.
Windows Defender
