Module 4: Pericardium Flashcards
The heart is enclosed in a
fibro-serous sac termed the pericardium
The pericardium and its fluid do what?
lubricate the moving surfaces of the heart
The outer layer is the
fibrous pericardium
The fibrous pericardium is
tethered to the central tendon of the diaphragm, the sternum
The serous pericardium is a
closed sac
the inner surface of the fibrous pericardium is the
parietal layer
the inner layer on the myocardium of the heart is the
visceral layer, or epicardium (part of the heart wall).
The space between the parietal and visceral layers contains
a thin film of fluid and is known as the pericardial cavity
The pericardial cavity normally contains up to
50mL of pericardial fluid
The function of the pericardium is to
protect the heart from infection or malignancy
The pericardium also anchors
the heart in the mediastinum
The pericardium also prevents
overfilling of the heart with blood and lubricates the moving heart which prevents friction.
