Module 4 Membranes Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
- Protects cell from outside environment, Homeostasis
- Controls cellโs cytoplasmic contents
- Senses the environment
Plasma Membrane binds to
Cytoskeleton and Extracellular Matric (ECM)
* Help maintain cellโs shape
Plasma membrane is selectively permeable.
Proposed models for structural makeup of membrane
- Davson-Danielli Model
- Fluid Mosaic Model - Sanger and Nicholson (1972)
Phospholipids in membrane are in CONSTANT movement
Hence the โFluidโ in Fluid-Mosaic Model
Cholesterol in phospholipids
Cholesterol intercalates between phospholipids helps maintain structural integrity of the membrane. More rigid than phospholipids.
Membrane in cold temperature:
Membrane becomes more fluid
Membrane in warm temperature:
Membrane becomes less fluid
Causes of changes in biochemistry of membranes
Increase in number of membrane proteins, amount of unsaturated fatty acids, and amount of cholesterol
Diversity of proteins in membrane
- Surface proteins
- Transmembrane proteins: Controls what comes in and out; signal molecules; can detect things outside of the cell and change structure
Different functions of membrane proteins
- Anchor proteins: Interact with microfillaments and give integrity to cell
- Enzyme proteins: Anchored to membrane; facilitate changes and convert molecules
- .
Issues with moving things through membrane
- Diffusion: molecules naturally move down concentration gradient
- Sometimes going against gradient is necessary; must put in more work
