Module 4: Lesson 1 - Receptive skills Flashcards
What are receptive skills? And name two.
Listening and reading skills are known as receptive skills.
It is the method by which we “receive” information.
Receptive skills do not require learners to produce any language, only receive it.
As well as being spoken or written language, receptive skills also involve non-verbal communication such as people’s body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions.
Name 6 sub-skills of reading.
- Skimming
- Scanning
- Extensive reading
- Intensive reading
- Making predictions
- Comprehension
What is skimming?
Skimming is reading to understand the main idea of a text, and you are not expected to read every word.
The bigger picture is more important than exploring a location in detail.
The focus is on improving the speed of reading.
When skimming, you can look out for 2 types of words. What are they?
Content (lexical) words: usually nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs
Function (grammar) words: usually articles, prepositions, pronouns, and conjunctions.
What is scanning?
Scanning is reading to find specific information.
It’s a technique to pinpoint key information and ideas such as names, numbers, specific facts, and so on.
Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly down the page identifying specific words and phrases to find a particular answer or detail.
The focus is more on lexis than general meaning and to ignore irrelevant information.
Name 4 skimming techniques.
- Read the title and subheading, and look at the images.
- Read the first and last lines.
- Underline, highlight, or tick all key content words.
- Don’t focus on unfamiliar words.
What are some online considerations when teaching reading skills?
- How long is the text?
- If more than 100 words, can learners read comfortably?
- What are learners using? Laptop or phone?
- How can learners interact with the text?
- How will I share my materials? Screen share, send copy to learners, send a link.
