Module 4 lec 3 Flashcards
what interactions can xenobiotics have with the immune system?
Immunosuppression (decreased response)
immuno-stimulation (increased response)
hypersensitivity (affect B or T cells)
autoimmunity (antibodies target body)
what are the 4 hypersensitivity reactions?
immediate
antibody-mediated
immune complex mediated
cell-mediated
explain immediate hypersensitivity process
first exposure has no harmful effects
antibodies are made for the future
future exposures attach to antibody and elicits effects
explain anti-body mediated hypersensitivity process
chemical attaches to body cell, antibodies attach to chemical, body attacks both cell and chemical
produces inflammation
explain immune complex-mediated hypersensitivity process
antigen and antibody attach to cell linings (called a complex)
complex grows / accumulates
complement system begins attaching to complexes
explain cell-mediated hypersensitivity process
macrophage takes sample of chemical to T cell
T cell releases cytokines
more macrophages are recruited
