Module 4 exam pt 2 Flashcards
What are the main components of the diencephalon?
Thalamus & hypothalamus
What is the function of the Thalamus?
It is the relay station for incoming sensory impulses and directs the impulse to the appropriate area of the cerebral cortex for interpretation
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
Is the control center of the body and regulates homeostasis
What is the function of the primary motor cortex?
Direct voluntary movements by controlling motor neurons in the brainstem/spinal cord
What is the function of the primary somatosensory cortex?
Receive sensory information from receptors for touch, pressure, pain, vibration, or temperature
What is the function of the somatosensory association area?
Monitor activity in the primary somatosensory cortex and recognize different sensations
What is the function of the auditory association area?
Recognize different sounds and regulate activity in the auditory cortex
What is the role of chemoreceptors in homeostasis?
To detect changes in concentrations of specific chemicals or compounds
What role do baroreceptors play in homeostasis?
Monitor BP, regulate cardiac function and adjust blood flow, sets pace for respiration, triggers visceral reflexes in digestive and urinary tracts
What role does the hypothalamus play in homeostasis?
Interacts with other areas of the brain and links brain activity and autonomic functions
