CCG Mandate (Oceans Act)
Oceans Act gives the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans responsibility for providing:
- Aids to nagivation
- Marine communications and traffic managements services
- Ice breaking and ice management services
- Channel maintenance
- Marine search and rescue
- Marine pollution response
- Support of other government departments, boards, and agencies by providing ships, aircraft and other services
CCG Mandate (Shipping Act)
The Canada Shipping Act 2007 gives the Minister powers, responsibilities and obligations concerning:
- Aids to navigation
- Search and rescue
- Pollution response
- Vessel traffic services

Contribution to national security through proactive leadership and management of the maritime security file within DFO
- Search and Rescue
Secondary mandate to every vessel in the fleet.
The first consideration shall always be to save the lives in danger including measures to evacuate all persons from the distressed vessel and recover any persons from the water.
Prevent loss of life and injury

Provides a specific sea day allocation per year to the support of scientific activities, both in fisheries and oceanographic disciplines
- Fisheries Protection
Provides a specific sea day allocation per year to the support of fisheries and oceanic habitat protection, management, enforcement, scientific and safety related activities
- Aids to Nagivation
Short range marine aids: visual aids (lights and buoys), aural aids (fog horns), radar aids (reflectors and beacons); long-range marine aids (electronic aids, differential GPS)
- Ice breaking
- Ensure safe navigation
- Prevent the formation of ice jams and flooding
- Maintain open routes for maritime commerce
