Module 4 Flashcards
What is experimental research?
Testing hypotheses in a controlled env’t (with or without humans)
Why is experimental research important?
For discovering/using new therapies (interventions, medical devices, drugs)
What are the three founding principles of experimental research?
Randomisation, local control, replication
What are the main purposes of conducting experimental research?
Discovery, evaluating efficacy and establishing safety (often involves animal models and use of approach in ideal situation to determine efficacy), monitoring effectiveness in real world (including economic considerations)
What is the focus of basic research?
Discovery
What is the focus of preclinical studies?
Evaluating efficacy and safety
What is the focus of clinical trials?
Evaluating effectiveness of intervention in humans
What are the main steps within experimental research application processes?
- Discovery (basic research)
- Development (basic research)
- Preclinical studies
- Clinical trials
- Benefit-risk assessment
