Law that prevented Colonists from moving west of the Appalachian Mtns.
How did the Proclamation of 1763 impact the relationship between the colonies and Britain?
Increased tensions and made the colonists angry b/c they felt they had lost their rights as Englishmen.
What was Common Sense?
Pamphlet written by Thomas Paine.
How did Common Sense contribute to the American Revolution?
Argued for freedom from Britain and helped persuade people to support the patriots.
Why did Britain pass taxes (Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Townshend Acts etc.)
To pay off war debt (French & Indian War)
Why were the colonists upset with the taxes?
No taxation w/o representation, representation in Parlaiment.
What was the impact of the Boston massacre?
Colonists used it as propaganda to make the British look bad and gather Patriot support.
What was the importance of the battles of Lexington and Concord?
Known as the first shots of the American Revolution.
What was the phrase that is used to describe Battle of Lexington and Concord?
“Shot Heard ‘round the world.”
What was the Declaration of Independence?
Document that made a formal break w/ Britain.
Why was the Declaration of Independence made?
Explain to the rest of the world the reasons that the colonists decided to revolt against Britain.
What were the independence supporters called?
Patriots
What were the colonists against independence called?
Loyalists or Tories
What were the advantages of the British?
Well funded, more people, established professionally trained army, strong Navy, experience, more supplies
What were the disadvantages of the British?
Far away from home, did not know the land, cause was not as personal for the soldiers
What were the advantages of the Patriots?
Knew the land, motivation, foreign aid (French) & others, well respected leader (George Washington)
What were the disadvantages of the Patriots?
- Poorly funded,
- lack of weapons, ammo, and supplies (Uniforms, food rations),
- army at the beginning not well trained or disciplined,
- not all colonists supported the cause (loyalists, Pacifists [Quakers])
What was Britain’s 3 pronged Attack?
- The British plan to separate New England colonies from the Middle Colonies by
- capturing Albany, NY & Control of the Hudson River.
Who was supposed to go to the 3 pronged attack?
Burgoyne from North, St. Leger from West, Howe from South.
Why did the 3 pronged attack fail?
Only Burgoyne made the journey and his army was weakened, tiered and low on supplies.
Why was the Battle of Saratoga considered a Turning Point?
Convinced the French to enter the war on the Patriots side. Could give them badly needed support and supplies to level playing field.
Who was the Marquis de Lafayette?
French nobleman who volunteered to help with war effort. Became a friend and aide to G.W.
What was Valley Forge?
Winter camp of the Continental Army where they endured extreme hardship and suffering.
Why is Valley Forge important?
Demonstrated the will and dedication of American troops.
What was the role of women during the Revolutionary War?
Women took over responsibilities of men or some were camp followers. Some participated in fighting.

George Washington
