Module 4 Flashcards
Is used at airports which allow night landings. Seen from the
air, runway lights form an outline of the runway.
Runway Lighting
Are installed at many airports to provide rapid and positive identification of the approach end of a particular runway. The system consists of a pair of synchronized flashing lights located laterally on each side of the runway threshold.
Runway End Identification Lights (REIL)
A pair of four lights on each side of the runway on precision instrument runways, these lights extends along the full width of the runway. These lights show green when viewed by approaching aircraft and red when seen from the runway.
Runway End Lights
White elevated lights that run the length of the runway on either side. ______ are used to outline the edges of runways during periods of darkness or restricted visibility conditions.
Runway Edge Lights
Lights embedded into the surface of the runway at 50 ft (15 m) intervals along the runway centerline on some precision instrument runways.
Runway Centerlight Lighting System (RCLS)
Rows of white light bars (with three in each row) on either side of the centerline over the first 3,000 ft (914 m) (or to the midpoint, whichever is less) of the runway.
Touchdown Zone Lights (TDZL)
Installed along lead-off markings, alternate green and yellow lights embedded into the runway pavement. It starts with green light about runway centerline to the position of first centerline light beyond holding position on taxiway.
Taxiway Centerline Lead Off Lights
Installed the same way as taxiway centerline lead-off Lights.
Taxiway Centerline Lead On Lights
A lighting system installed on the approach end of an airport runway and consists of a series of light bars, strobe lights, or a combination of the two that extends outward from the runway end.
Approach Lighting System
Are also a recent development not subject to any international standard and are most likely to be found in the USA. They are intended to warn pilots approaching the runway holding point area that another aircraft is in the course of either landing or departing on the same runway and currently located prior to the imminent runway intersection and detected at a speed higher than 20 knots.
Runway Entrance Lights (RELs)
Is composed of flush mounted, in-pavement, unidirectional
fixtures in a double longitudinal row aligned either side of the runway centerline lighting.
Takeoff Hold Lights (THLs)
Provide a signal, to an aircraft in position for takeoff or rolling, that it is unsafe to takeoff because the runway is occupied or about to be occupied by another aircraft or ground vehicle.
Illuminated Red Lights
Are used to outline the edges of taxiways during periods of darkness or restricted visibility conditions. These fixtures emit blue light.
Taxiway Edge Lights
are used to facilitate ground traffic under low visibility conditions. They are located along the taxiway centerline in a straight line on straight portions, on the centerline of curved portions, and along designated taxiing paths in portions of runways, ramp, and apron areas. (Green Lights)
Taxiway Centerline Lights
Are installed at holding positions on taxiways in order to increase the conspicuity of the holding position in low visibility conditions. They may also be installed to indicate the location of an intersecting taxiway during periods of darkness. (3 Yellow Lights)
Clearance Bar Lights
