Capsule collection
small collection (often experimental in nature) created by a fashion brand company for a particular fashion season
Contractor
company that specializes in the constructing, sewing, finishing of goods or that specializes in a specific part of the production process (such as pleating piece goods)
Cultural sustainability
strategies that maintain the value and integrity of cultural norms, including artifacts and processes that represent the culture
Cut, make, trim (CMT)
contractors who cut, make, and trim the garments/products for the fashion brand company
Direct-to-consumer
strategy in which a fashion brand company sells merchandise directly to the ultimate consumer, typically through e-commerce or direct sales
Dual distribution
strategy whereby fashion brand companies sell their branded merchandise themselves as well as through other retailers
Economic sustainability
creating supply chains that provide financial resources necessary for building and sustaining profitable businesses that serve the common good
Electronic data interchange (EDI)
technology that makes possible the digital transfer of of data from one computer another without human intervention
Enterprise resource planning (ERP)
systems that assist fashion companies in managing and integrating core business processes
Environmental sustainability
focuses on sustaining the earth’s natural resources using practices that (1) reduce consumption of nonrenewable resources and (2) ensure that consumption of renewable resources does not exceed their long-term rates of natural regeneration
Fashion season
name given to lines or collections that correspond to seasons of the year when consumers would most likely wear the merchandise (e.g., spring, summer, pre-fall, fall, holiday, and resort)
Fast fashion
ultra fast supply chain calendar and operations that focus on consumer demand of fashion goods
Full-package contractor
a type of contract facility that provides design, manufacturing, and trimming services
Horizontal integration
business strategy whereby a company focuses on a single stage of production/distribution but with varying products or services
Logistics
coordination of the purchasing and movement of materials, components, and products through the company’s supply chain
Multichannel retail
supply chain strategy whereby a company offers merchandise through multiple retail channels (e.g., brick-and-mortar stores, online, mobile app)
Omnichannel retail
strategy resulting in the seamless integration of multichannel retail strategies including brick and mortar and online retail operations
Point of sale (POS)
time and place where a retailer sells merchandise to the customer
Product life cycle management (PLM)
technologies used to track fashion product information through their design, development, manufacturing, and retailing strategies
Replenishment
reordering of merchandise. Automatic replenishment is the automatic reordering of merchandise
Radio frequency identification (RFID)
wireless communication and tagging technology used to accurately track containers or merchandise through the supply chain
See now, buy now
supply chain calendar whereby consumers can purchase the merchandise immediately after the new line/collection is presented to the media
Short-cycle supply chain
ultra fast supply chain calendar and operations that focus on consumer demand of fashion goods
Social sustainability
focuses on creating and sustaining social structures and processes that ensure the health and well being of individuals and communities
Specialty store retailers of private label apparel (SPA)
specialty retailer that offers only private label merchandise (e.g., zara, banana republic)
Specification buying
process by which a merchandiser works directly with a full-package contractor to create a tech pack
Stock-keeping unit (SKU)
a number code used to identify each distinct product and service that can be purchased, thus enabling the company to systematically track its inventory or product availability
Supply chain assurance
assuring responsible sourcing, production, and purchasing throughout the supply chain
Supply chain calendar
stages and time necessary for fashion companies to research, design, manufacture, and distribute a fashion product
Supply chain management (SCM)
coordination and management of the business activities necessary to take a fashion product from materials to manufacturing to be sold to the ultimate consumer
Supply chain traceability
knowing where, how and by whom all aspects of a fashion product are made and distributed
Supply chain transparency
effective communication where, how, and by whom all aspects of a fashion product are made and distributed
Universal product code (UPC)
a bar coding systems used to electronically identify merchandise; a 12 digit number that identifies the manufacturer and merchandise item by stock keeping unit
Value-added network (VAN)
third party computer system that allows business data to be transmitted electronically from one company to another
Vendor-managed replenishment (VMR)
programs whereby the fashion brand company (vendor) reviews retail sales/stockout data and orders replenishments as often as required
Vertical integration
supply chain strategy whereby a company handles several steps in production and/or distribution
