Fashion
“style of consumer product or way of behaving that is temporarily adopted by a discernible proportion of members of a social group because that chosen style or behavior is perceived to be socially appropriate for time and situation”
Soft goods
merchandise including apparel, footwear, accessories, home fashions
Supply chain
the interconnected individuals, businesses, and processes that are necessary to get a product to the ultimate consumer; each stage of a supply chain adds value to the product
Value chain
used to describe the value-added aspects of supply chains
Design
systematic and user-centered process that results in products that reflect the values of the individual designer
Merchandising
management processes related to buying and selling fashion products; that is, products assortment planning, acquisition, pricing, presentation, and sales to fulfill a company’s financial goals
Marketing
management process that connects product offerings with the values, wants, needs, and behaviors of customers
Textile
used to describe any fabric (e.g., woven or knitted materials) made from natural (e.g., cotton, wool, silk) or manufactured (e.g., nylon, polyester, rayon) fibers
Fibers
the basic unit used in making textile yarns and fabrics
Generic families
classification of fibers according to chemical composition and characteristics
Yarns
collection of fibers or filaments laid or twisted together to form a continuous strand strong enough for use in fabrics
Spun yarns
yarn created by the spinning together of short staple
Filament yarns
yarn created by spinning together long, continuous fibers
Fabric construction
methods used to make fabrics from solutions, directly from fibers, and from yarns; weaving and knitting are the most common methods
Fabrication

Textile mill
company that specializes in the fabric construction stage of production (e.g., weaving, knitting)
Finishing
(1) process used on fibers, yarns, or fabrics to change or improve the performance or appearance of the material or (2) post-production process of trimming, pressing, and folding finished goods
Griege goods
fabrics that have not received finishing treatments, such as bleaching, shearing, brushing, embossing , or dyeing; unfinished fabrics
Textile converters
company that specializes in finishing fabrics (including printing)
Converted textiles
fabrics that have been dyed, printed, or finished
Finished textiles

Ready-to-wear (RTW)
Fashion merchandise made with mass-production techniques using standardized sizing; sometimes referred to as “off-the-rack”
Prêt-à-porter
french term for ready-to-wear; in the United Kingdom, this merchandise is called off-the-peg, and in Italy, it is called moda pronto
Couture
a french term that literally means “sewing,” it refers to the highest-priced fashion products produced in small quantities, made of high-quality fabrics using considerable hand-sewing techniques, and sized to fit individual clients’ bodies
Haute couture

Line
a group of fashion items developed with a theme that links them together and that are presented together
Collections
a group of fashion items presented together, usually by luxury or designer price zone fashion brand companies
Contractors
company that specializes in the constructing, sewing, and finishing of goods or that specializes in a specific part of the production process ( such as pleating piece goods)
Subcontractor
a subcontractor is hired by a main contractor to perform a specific task as part of the overall project
Sweatshop
originally referred to the system of contractors and subcontractors whereby work was “sweated off.” Currently used to refer to a company that violates labor, safety and health, and/or worker compensation laws, or that has work environments that are unsafe, inhumane, or abusive without providing opportunities for workers to organize or negotiate better terms of work
Trade unions
organization of workers whose purpose is to improve working conditions, rights, and wages for the workers it represents
Consumer behavior - process by which individuals select, purchase, use, maintain, and dispose of fashion products
Fast fashion
ultra-fast supply chain calendar and operations that focus on consumer demand of fashion goods
Trade publications
a publication (print and/or digital), such as a newspaper, newsletter, or magazine, that is targeted to the professionals within a particular industry
Retailer
a company that sells merchandise and associated services to the ultimate consumer
Trade association
association made up of member companies or countries designed to research, promote, advocate for, and/or provide educational services regarding an industry or a specific aspect of an industry
