What is the APS?
Australian Psychological Society
- largest professional association for psychologists in Australia
- supports the interests of psychologists and the practice of psychology in Australia
- purpose is to represent, promote and advance psychology, within the context of improving community wellbeing and scientific knowledge.
- enhancing psych as a discipline and also as a profession.
- making sure that psychologists act in ways that are useful in society.
What is the difference between APS and PsyBA?
- PsyBA is a legal body established by an act of Parliament.
- APS is a professional organisation established by a group of people trained in the field of psychology.
- PsyBA determines who is registered as a psychologist
What are the benefits of the APS?
- provides a community for people working in the field of psychology
- educational benefits for students, practitioners and researchers
- services and information for psychologists and community (referral services and tipsheets)
Benefits of establishing a collegial community?
Establishing a collegial community refers to networking opportunities, and interacting with colleagues who have similar ideas/interest.
This is good because it can act as a SOURCE OF INFO and ADVICE, JOB OPPORTUNITIES, and give a SENSE OF SOLIDARITY and PERSONAL IDENTITY
What are APS collegial groups?
These are groups based on specialised areas of interest.
They are divided into branches, colleges and interest groups.
what are APS branches?
APS Branches are divided by state and regional groups, and promotes psychology within that area.
For example, a branch of APS in each state sets up activities for people in that area.
What are APS colleges?
These represent specialised disciplines within psychology. Eg. Clinical Psychology, Neuropsychology….. and they have specific criteria about who can join.
They are responsible for promoting their particular field of expertise and maintaining a high level of professional standards.
What are APS interest groups?
Brings together people who have special interests so that they can network.
These cover a wide range of topics from peace psychology, to psychology of relationships. Anyone can join these, even student subscribers.
What are PD events?
Professional Development events by the APS.
Full and associate members are ethically obliged to accrue (30 hrs) PD points for ongoing membership - ensures that their practice and services remain at a high standard through continual development and experience.
APS also holds events and conferences - eg. information days for psychology studens
What are some APS practitioner resources
- how to manage a practice

- information on earnings and medicare rebate
- registration details
- email newsletter.
What are some academic resources from the APS?
- information for both members and nonmembers
- promotes research by offering scholarships, grants and awards.
What is the APS code of ethics
Outlines principles of professional conduct, and responsibilities of psychologists.

- APS acts as an advocate on a range of social issues
- media releases, media training for psychs, submissions to the government and position statements.
