Social change refers to “the transformation of culture and social institutions over time”
• Social change has four common characteristics:
– It is happening all of the time
– It is sometimes intentional but often unplanned
– It is often controversial
– Some changes matter more than others
• Population aging is reflective of the process of social change

- Apocalyptic demography can influence how older persons are seen and treated in the social world.
Contributes to ageism:
• Creates a discourse on aging as a negative experience for society and for individuals
Contributes to intergenerational conflict
• Pits one group against another as younger generations believe they are paying for the
“burden” of older generations
