Module 3: Plant Biology🌱🌿🍃 Flashcards
What is the first stage of plant reproduction?
The production of a seed
What does a seed contain?
All the information needed in order to allow a new plant to grow
What does Germination involve?
Germination involves the breaking open of the seed coat and the development of structures that will eventually become the stem and root of the plant
What THREE minerals to plants need to be able to grow?
- Calcium: to build cell walls
- Magnesium: for chlorophyll formation
- Nitrogen: for amino acid and protein formation
Where do plants get minerals from?
- Plant roots are covered in root hair cells, which take in minerals and water from the soil.
- The root hairs greatly increase the surface area of the root so that the maximum amount of water and minerals can be absorbed.
- They also help to anchor the plant in the soil.
If a plant has a weak stem and yellow/ green leaves which mineral is it lacking?
Nitrogen
If a plant has poor flower/fruit growth which mineral is it lacking?
Potassium
If a plant’s leaves are yellow from the bottom upwards, which mineral is it lacking?
Magnesium
If a plant has purple leaves and small roots, which mineral is it lacking?
Phosphorous
What are the conditions that a seedling needs to grow properly?
- Water (moisture)
- warmth
- air (oxygen)
