Module 3 musculoskeletal Flashcards
Radial nerve deformities? and what splint would you use for that?
wrist drop. Dynamic wrist extension or volar splint. (could be dynamic finger extension splint if they have more trouble with extending their fingers then they do with extending the wrist).
What deformity would you see with ulnar nerve injury? What splint?
Claw hand. MCP dorsal blocking splint. When ulnar n is injured the MCP of the 4th and 5th fingers hyperextend. MCP dorsal blocking splint will cause flexing and enable the use of those fingers.
Due to median nerve injury, pt is unable to flex fingers 2 and 3. i.e cant form full fist. What is this deformity? Looks like ulnar n injury claw hand but is not.
Hand of Benediction
Carpal tunnel syndrome involved the median nerve. What splint should you use and with what position of the wrist?
Volar splint with wrist in neutral.
Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when you keep your wrist extended too much. What intervention would you use with pt?
Make sure wrists are in neutral when working. Stretching. Stop repetitive movement, and vibration, and use orthotics at night. Median nerve glides. Digits ROM.
What type of splint for cubital tunnel syndrome? What will you tell them not to do?
Long arm splint (because you dont want the arm in flexion all the time at the elbow, you want it extended with just a slight amount of flexion). DONT do very much elbow flexion.
Intervention for cubital tunnel syndrome?
activity modification, TENDON GLIDES, ulnar nerve glides, scar sensitivity, edema management.
Radial tunnel syndrome, what type of splint would you use?
Long arm splint if its higher, wrist extension splint if its lower.
Intervention for radial tunnel syndrome
activity modification, radial nerve glides, tendon glides, scar sensitivity, edema management.
What position do you want to avoid with radial tunnel syndrome?
Forceful wrist extension and supination
