Module 3, Lecture 3: Urban Competition Flashcards
Environmental challenges
Environmental factors that lower average survival or reproductive success
Abiotic challenges
Non-living factors like weather or water availability that affect survival
Biotic challenges
Living factors like predators, parasites, or pathogens that affect survival
Competitive dominance
One species (often larger) outcompetes another, forcing it into more challenging habitats
Removing the dominant species
The subordinate species may shift into easier habitats to improve fitness
Removing the subordinate species
The dominant species likely won’t shift, since it already occupies the better habitat
Competitive exclusion tolerance rule
Species are separated across environments because dominant species do better in easier areas, while others adapt to tougher conditions
Propensity
A natural tendency or inclination to behave in a certain way
