Module 3 Braking Systems Flashcards

1
Q

What material is most commonly used in disk brake pads?

A

A composite material of carbon ceramic is used due to their high heat capacity and potential coarseness.

Q

What forces are happening to the rotor in a brake disk when you want it to slow down?

A

A piston forces the brake pads against the rotor to eventually slow it down.

Q

How does a drum brake work?

A

hydraulic pressure is sent to the wheel cylinder, which forces the brake shoes or pads against the inside of the drum, creating friction.

Q

What are the advantages of drum brakes?

A

Drum brakes are less expensive to manufacture and are generally simpler to maintain and repair than disc brakes. They also provide better heat dissipation, making them less likely to overheat and fail under heavy use.

Q

How does regenerative braking working?

A

Regenerative braking works by the wheels being connected to a generator. When the car is coasting (or when your foot is off the pedal) wheels turn the generator, which creates electricity and charges the battery. Whilst this generator is spinning, it has resistance which slows down the car.

Q

What are advantages and disadvantages of regenerative brakes?

A

Advantages - Rotors and pads should last longer,(because you use the brakes less). More range for EV’s.

Disadvantages - expensive initial cost, expensive to repair, limited effectiveness at low speed.

Q

What are drum brakes generally made out of?

A

Cast iron because they’re high heat resistance and wear resistant.

Q

How do band brakes work?

A

Band brakes are a type of brake that slows down or stops the rotation of a drum or pulley by creating friction between a flexible band and the drum. When you need to slow down, the band is tightened around the drum to create resistance, which slows down the rotation. You can control how much braking force is applied by adjusting the tension on the band. While band brakes are simple and inexpensive, they may not be as powerful as other types of brakes and require regular maintenance to work their best.

Q

What are parts of a car make the non-exhaust traffic-related particles that creates pollution

A

non-exhaust traffic-related particles, which are either generated from tyre, brake, clutch, or road surface wear or already exist in the environment as deposited material and become resuspended due to traffic-induced turbulence, tyre shear and the action of the wind. (PM= particulate matter)

Q

What positive impacts do braking systems have on society?

A

Cars became much more safer and allows car to be faster, speed limit to be higher, trucks can carry more supplies and goods, public transport become safer, reliable and convenient.

The increased production of brakes also calls for more jobs to build and maintain.

Q

What are the negative impacts of braking systems on the environment?

A

There are many negative impacts on the environment such as there are iron particles that are emitted every time you brake, heaps of brake pads and brake rotors that fill up landfill, and the waste of heaps of cast iron.

Q

What are disadvantages do of braking systems on society.

A

Brakes can be expensive to replace and repair as they need to be replaced often.

Brake dust; the use of braking systems can produce brake dust which is small particles of metal and sometimes even asbestos. These can be harmful to breathe in.
