Module 3 Flashcards
Pressure machines
Machines used for the injection of arterial solution. Six devices can be used: Gravity, bulb syringe, combination of gravity and bulb syringe, hand pump, air pressure machine, and centrifugal pump
Hydroaspirator
Apparatus that is connected to the water supply. When the water is turned on suction is developed and is used to aspirate the contents of the body’s cavity
Electric aspirator
A device that uses motor to create a suction for the purpose of aspiration
Gravity injector
Apparatus used to inject arterial fluid during vascular (arterial) phase of the embalming process. It relies on gravity to create the pressure required to deliver the fluid (0.43 pounds of pressure per 1 foot of elevation)
Hand pump
Historical instrument resembling a large hypodermic syringe attached to a bottle apparatus. It is used to create either pressure for injection or vacuum for aspiration.
Bulb syringe
Self-contained, soft rubber manual pump designed to create pressure to deliver fluid as it passes through one-way valves located within the bulb. It is used only to deliver fluids. It can NOT be used for aspiration.
Electric spatula
Electrically heated blade that may be used to dry moist tissue, reduce swollen tissue, and restore contour.
Body lifts
Lifting device for lifting and movement of the deceased body. ( Examples of it being used: movement from the cot to embalming table to a dressing table or placement in a casket)
Sterilizers
Oven or appliance for sterilizing. An autoclave that sterilizes by steam under pressure at temperatures above 100 Celcius
Positioning devices
Preparation room equipment for properly positioning bodies before, during, and after vascular embalming.
Embalming tables
The table used for embalming procedures : Stainless steel, porcelain, fiber glass •Hydraulic or ratchet type height adjustment •Have a drain channel on each side •Drain hole at the foot end
Dressing tables
Used for dressing/cosmetic procedures : Laminated plastic •Adjustable in height •May be foldable •No drain holes
Refrigeration
Cooling units used to slow postmortem changes in the deceased body
Sharps container
Occupational Safety and Health Administration required receptacle for proper disposal of sharps
Arterial tubes
Tube used to inject embalming solution into the blood vascular system
Needle injector
Mechanical device used to impel specially designed metal pins into a bone
Scalpel
Two-piece embalming instrument consisting of a handle and a blade used to make incisions and excisions
Aneurysm hook
An embalming instrument that is used for blunt dissection and in raising vessels
Aneurysm needle
An embalming instrument used for blunt dissection and raising vessels that have an eye in the hook portion of the instrument for placing ligatures around the vessels
Bistoury knife
A curved cutting instrument that cuts from the inside outward (some embalmers prefer this for opening arteries and veins and also can be used for the excision of tissues)
Scissors
Instrument for cutting 1) Arterial scissors for opening vessels. Blunt side should be used against the skin surface of the body. 2) Bandage scissors have a large blunt end to help protect the skin from beng cut
Groove director
Instrument used ti guide vein tubes into vessels
Hemostats
Used to clamp leaking vessels. 1) Arterial Hemostat is used to hold the arterial tube in an artery. Ends of the hemostat can be curved or straight, separated or smooth, or plain or rat toothed. 2) Dressing forceps are LONG hemostats that can be used for packing orifices or handling contaminated bandage dressings
Arterial fixation forceps
designed for holding the arterial tube
Spring forceps
used to grasp and hold tissues
Angular spring forceps
Multi purpose instrument (sizes vary) used in the embalming process (drain instrument)
Retractors
A general purpose embalming insturment which is primarily used to spread incisions and to afford more working room.
Towel clamps
used for grasping tissue, securing towels or drapes during a surgical procedure
Drainage tubes
Embalming instrument inserted into a vein and used to aid the drainage of venous blood from the body
Suture needles
•Large postmortem needles are used for autopsy incisions and ones for raising vessels •3/8 inch needles are used for more delicate suturing •Loopuyptneedles are designed for better grip
Nasal aspirator
used to aspirate the nose or throat through the nostrils
Autopsy aspirator
Has many openings to be “non clogging” and is used to aspirate blood and arterial fluid from the cavities of autopsied bodies
Trocar
Sharply pointed surgical instrument used in cavity embalming to aspirate the cavities and inject cavity fluid. The trocar may also be used for supplemental hypodermic embalming
Hypovalve trocar
A long thin trocar used for supplemental hypodermic embalming
Cavity fluid injector
•Screws onto the cavity fluid bottles •When the device is inverted, fluid flows through the trocar into the body
Hypodermic needles
A needle that allows injection into the body
Trocar button applicator
The trocar button applicator is used to insert the trocar button
Vein expander
An embalming instrument inserted into the vein for insertion of the drainage instrument
Needle holder
Preparation room equipment used to hold suturing needles and keep them in good condition
Preservative embalming chemicals
chemicals which inactivate saprophytic bacteria, render unsuitable for nutrition the media upon which bacteria survive, and which will arrest decomp by altering enzymes and lysins of the body as well as converting the decomptissue as determined in the embalming analysis.
Accessory chemicals
Chemicals used in addition to vascular (arterial) and cavity embalming fluids. Include but are not limited to hardening compounds, preservative powders, sealing agents, mold preventative agents, and compress application agents
Supplemental fluids
A fluid the embalmer injects prior to the preservative solution (pre injection fluid) or adds to the preservative solution to enhance certain qualities of the preservative fluid (conjection, dye, humectant, and water conditioner)
Sealing agents
Agents that provide a barrier or seal against any leakage of fluid or blood
Cotton
Can be used for packing / bandaging
Eye caps
Thin, domelike shell made of hardened cloth, metal or plastic placed beneath the eyelids to restore natural curvature and to maintain the position of the closed eye
Trocar button
Plastic, threaded screw like device for sealing punctures and small round trocar openings
Mouth former
Device used in the mouth to shape the contour of the lips
Plastic goods/undergarments
Can be used to protect clothing from conditions such as elcerations, gangrene, or burnt tissue. Helps to control leakage from the tissue donor body, autopsied body or the condondition of edema. Includes: pants, coveralls, stockings, sleeves, all in various sizes. May use powdered deodorants / preservatives within the garment to control odor and absorb leakage.
Ligature
Thread, cord, or wire used for tying vessels, tissues, or bone
Calvarium clamps
Device used to fasten the calvarium to the cranium after a cranial autopsy
