Module 3, 4 & 5 Flashcards
What is ecological succession?
The process where species in habitats in an area change over time
What is population density And the equation for it?
Measures the average number of organisms in a specific area
Dp= total pop/land area covered by pop
What are the three types of spatial distribution patterns?
Random uniform and clumped
What are population ranges?
Limits that a species can tolerate (geographic location)
What are density dependent limiting factors?
They rely on the population density (like competition, disease, parasites, predation)
What are density independent limiting factors?
They don’t rely on population density (like weather and other phenomenas, human interference like pollution and dams)
What happens when a population exceeds carrying capacity?
More deaths than births
What is population growth rate mean?
Explains how fast the population grows
What type of growth does the human population follow and how are technological advances responsible for this?
We follow exponential growth and medicine agriculture and shelter have severely impacted our population growth rate because of improved living conditions.
What is the population growth rate equation?
Birthrate-deathrate+migration rate/10
What is zero population growth?
When birth plus immigration equals death plus emigration
What is demographic transition?
The change in a population from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates
What does rapid growth look like?
Triangle with high birth rate with turned in sides until the peak (high death rate)
What does a negative growth rate look like?
Low birth rate, then a bubble on top
What is biodiversity? Why is it important?
The variety of life in an area that is determined by the number of different species in that area
It increases the stability of an ecosystem and contributes to the health of the biosphere
What kind of impact do invasive species have on biodiversity?
Invasive species can disrupt and destroy biodiversity because of competition, diseases and more
What are renewable resources?
Resources that are replaced by natural processes, faster than they are consumed
