Module 3 Flashcards
Hybrid orbital
An electron orbital that forms when the atomic orbitals of and atom mix together to form a new kind of orbital
Molecular orbital
The energy and region in space in which an electron can be found orbiting the nuclei that share it.
When a certain number of atomic orbitals hybridize,
they result in the same number of hybrid orbitals.
Sigma bond
A bond in which the electron densty is concentrated along the internuclear axis.
Pi Bond
A bond in which the electron density is not concentrated along the internuclear axis.
Complex Ion
A metal ion that incorporates another substance (usually a solvent) into its orbitals.
