2
Q

What are aquifers

A

Geologic formations comprised of permeable material (e.g., sand,
gravel, porous or fractured limestone, sandstone or highly fractured rock)
- large pore spaces, well connection

Q

What is permeability

A

a measure of the ease of passage of liquids or gases or specific chemicals through the material

4
Q

What are aquitards

A

Geologic formations comprised of relatively low‐permeability material (silt, clay, till, shale), that do not transmit significant amounts of groundwater
- small pore spaces, low connectivity

Q

What was the purpose of water quality sampling for lab 3

A
  • determining the sources of well 4 water
  • determine if well 4 water quality is acceptable

6
Q

What was the water tested for?

A

Temperature, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, chloride, nitrate.
Water at each location is compared to well water to see which is closest.

8
Q

What are the two options for obtaining a groundwater sample from a well?

A

Pump/purge stagnant water before sampling

Carefully sample water just in the screen interval (low flow/passive sampling)

Q

What are the main findings for glacial aquifers?

A
  1. Contaminants from geologic sources (particularly arsenic and manganese)
    - concern for drinking water
  2. Concentrations of nitrate and pesticides low in fine‐grained sediments even in areas of intensive agriculture
  3. Chloride concentrations increasing in urban areas
  4. “Nuisance” constituents in groundwater from the glacial aquifer system could limit groundwater use.

11
Q

Why are chloride and nitrate tests more of a health and safety concern?

A

could be exposed to the cadmium or chromium contained in the reactants added to the water.

A
17
Q

Where were water samples collected?

A

The two groundwater monitoring wells

18
Q

Why are the monitoring wells called 2-inch and 3-inch

A

This is the diameter

19
Q

Where is the meter that measures flow rate of the pumping well?

A

Inside the pump house
