What is Ethics?
Branch of philosophy that deals with the principles that govern a person’s behavior
What are the three main branches of Ethics?
Normative, Meta-ethics, and applied ethics
What is Deontology?
describes an absolute view of norms
focuses on duties, and not consequences
What is Utilitarianism?
whatever action is right or wrong is relative to the outcomes of a situation,
focuses on consequences, rather than actions
What are the four core principles?
Autonomy, Beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice
What is autonomy?
respecting patient’s best interests
creating an environment conductive to informed consent
honoring patient decision making regardless of choice
What is beneficence?
Acting in the patient’s best interest
On exams this usually conflicts with the principle of autonomy
What is nonmaleficence?
Do no harm
Careful consideration of risks vs benefits
demands informed consent if a risky procedure is attempted
