What are some disorders associated with the DI tract malfunctioning?
- Heartburn
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Diverticulosis
- Irritable bowel syndrome

What is heartburn?
Heartburn, also known as acid reflux, occurs when the stomach acid comes up the esophagus.
What is GERD?
gastro esophageal reflux disease
What are a few dietary treatments for heartburn?
-eating smaller meals that are low in fat,
-chewing food well,
- avoiding overeating,
-limiting coffee, tea, alcohol, and certain spices.
-waiting two hours after a meal before lying down and sleeping with the head of the bed elevated.
What is constipation?
Constipation is when stools (feces) are hard, dry, and infrequent, and it is a result of slow movement through the large intestine.
What are a few dietary treatment for constipation?
Eating high fiber foods, such as whole grains, dried, fresh fruits and vegetables, and nuts, will stimulate the large intestinal muscles.
What is Diarrhea?
Diarrhea is characterized by loose, watery, and frequent stools. Diarrhea usually results from an infection or a disease.
What are a few dietary treatments for diarrhea?
Diarrhea is the depletion of the body’s fluid volume. Increased fluid consumption to prevent dehydration. A diet of broth, tea, toast, and low fiber foods should be consumed, as tolerated.
What is Diverticulosis?
Food particles will get stuck in small pouches that push through weak spots in the colon resulting in inflammation or infection.
Main cause of this is low fiber diet and constipation.
What are a few treatments for diverticulosis?
Increasing your fiber intake, and activity level
What is IBS symptoms?
Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms include:
-bloating
-abdominal pain
-cramps
-diarrhea
-constipation
What foods aggravate IBS symptoms?
Gas producing foods like beans, milk products, alcohol, caffein, and fat.
What are a few treatments for IBS?
Frequent small meals, low fat meals, high fiber intake, probiotics, and avoiding foods that trigger symptoms.
What is Ulcers/ Peptic Ulcer?
Sores that can occur in the stomach, lower esophagus, or small intestine. Ulcers can be caused by certain bacteria (i.e. H. Pylori), or even from medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID).
What are a few factors that cause ulcers?
Stress, smoking, and genetics
