MODULE 2 THE SKELETAL AND MUSCULAR SYSTEM Flashcards
framework of bones and cartilage that provides structure, support, and protection to the human body
SKELETAL SYSTEM
integral to the body’s functionality, stability, and overall
health
SKELETAL SYSTEM
two primary types of bone tissue
COMPACT BONE
SPONGY BONE
known as cortical bone, is dense and hard. It forms the outer layer of most bones and provides strength and protection.
COMPACT BONE
trabecular or cancellous bone, has a porous, lattice-like structure. It is found at the ends of long bones and inside flat bones. helps reduce the weight of the skeleton and provides space for bone marrow.
SPONGY BONE
The basic structural unit of compact bone. consist of concentric rings called lamellae, surrounding a central canal (Haversian canal) that contains blood vessels and nerves.
OSTEON
The branching structures found in spongy bone. They create a network of interconnecting spaces filled with bone marrow.
