Module 2 Summary Flashcards
SbCl3 molecules are polar
Explain why
There is a difference in electronegativity between Sb and Cl
The molecule is not symmetrical
Cerium reacts with sulphuric acid. How has a salt been formed
Hydrogen ion has been replaced by a metal ion
How many electrons in each shell
1 - 2
2 - 8
3 - 18
4 - 32
Describe what is meant by the term ionic lattice, in terms of the type and arrangement of particles present
Repeating patterns of oppositely charged ions
State whether the follow substances conduct electricity when solid or motion and explain your answers in terms of the particles involved
- Aluminium
- Aluminium Fluoride
- Aluminium tribromide
Aluminium conducts electricity in solid and molten state. As it has a delocalised electron
Aluminium Fluoride conducts in molten state as ions are free to move. It does not conduct in solid as the ions are in fixed poisition in an ionic lattice
Aluminium tribromide does not conduct electricity in solid or molten because no ions are free to move.
Outline a simple practical test that would confirm the presence of chloride ions and give the expected results
Add a few drops of silver nitrate
White precipitate should form
What apparatus is used to separate the two liquid layers
Separating funnel
