Module 2, Sleep stress and self -regulation. Flashcards
How does stress manigest
Physical, Psychological and Physiological
Which graph demonstrated theory shows the relationship and effects of stress and what are the two types?
Inverted U THeory
Adaptive and Problematic
What are two effects of Problematic stress
Strong anxiety and Impaired performance
What are two effects of adaptive stress?
Increased attention and interest
Name 3 of the 5 factors for entering a flow state
intrinsically rewarding
clear goals
a sense of progress
task needs clear and immediate feedback
challenge must match the skill of the person,
What happens in the brain when you enter flow?
(clue: two regions)
The Neocortex ramps up
The pre-frontal cortex activity is reduced
Define sleep
A state of mind and body in which we experience altered or reduced consciousness.
Name 3 neuro-behavioural effects that can result from poor sleep
attention lapses
slowed working memory
reduced cognitive throughput
depressed mood
perseveration of through (rumination)
What are 3 adverse effects on bodily health from poor sleep?
Endocrine Functions
Metabolic
Inflammatory responses
What the two separate states of sleep?
REM (Rapid Eye Movement)
Non- REM
How long are typical sleep cycles?
90min
What happens in brain activity during deep sleep?
it becomes increasingly synchronous ( most unconsciouness)
Name 3 functions of sleep?
drives cellular growth and repair
clears toxins
supports immune system
supports metabolic health
What are the 3 levels of self-regulation?
Behavioural
Cognitive
Emotional
Name the 3 parts of the HPA axis
Adrenal Gland
Hypothalamus
Pituitary Gland
What and where is the adrenal gland
It’s an endocrine gland that produces hormones that regulate bodily functions.
It’s above the kidney
What specific hormone does the adrenal gland Produce and what does it do?
Cortisol. A major mediator of the stress response.
Where is the hypothalamus?
It is located near the brain base, below the thalamus.
What does the hypothalamus do?
Controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland and links the endocrine system to the nervous system.
What is the pituitary gland and what are it’s two parts?
It’s a pea-sized gland that has a major role in growth development and controls the function of the other endocrine glands.
(anterior and posterior)
What is the first step in the stress response?
The hypothalamus releases CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone)
what is the 2nd step in the stress response?
CRH stimulates the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary.
3rd step in the stress response?
The glucocorticoid hormone cortisol is secreted from the adrenal gland.
Step 4 of stress response?
Once threat is deemed minimal and, cortiosol inhibits the loop through negative feedback.
High level of Cortisol stops more CRCH from being released.
What are the 4 Psychological Factors that influence stress?
Behaviour
Thoughts
Bodily Sensations
Feelings
Name 3 factors that can increase stress?
Early trauma
Discrimination
Bullying
Poverty
Social Isolation
What are circadian rhythms?
A naturally occurring process that form your biological clock. They regulate your sleep walk cycle, energy and brainwaves.
