Module 2 - Separation Flashcards
What should you consider when separating a mixture?
Type of mixture (homogeneous or heterogeneous).
Properties of the components (size, density, solubility, boiling point).
Handpicking
Handpicking is used for separating larger size impurities (like dirt, stone ) from wheat rice.
Threshing
Threshing is a process used to separate grain from stacks, by beating the stacks to free the grain.
Winnowing
Winnowing is a process used to separate heavier or lighter components of a mixture via wind.
Sieving
Sieving allows fine flow particles to pass through the holes of a sieve while the biggest impurities remain on the sieve.
What is distillation?
Separating specific components from a liquid by evaporating.
What is chromatography?
Chromatography is a technique that separates components of a mixture based on their different interactions with two phases: a stationary phase and a mobile phase.
