Lesson 4 (M2) - Mixtures Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
Substances that are composed of either one type of atom or molecules.
What is an element?
Elements are those listed on the periodic table, made up of one type of unique atom.
What is a compound?
Two or more different types of atoms that are chemically bonded together.
What is a mixture?
Different substances that are blended together, but not chemically bonded.
What is a homogenous mixture?
A mixture that is mixed evenly (Uniform composition)
What is a heterogenous mixture?
A mixture in which you can see and distinguish different parts of it (non-uniform composition)
Types of mixture - Homogenous
Solution
Types of mixture - Heterogenous
Colloids, and suspensions
What is a solute?
The solid part that gets dissolved (i.e Salt, sugar)
What is a solvent?
The medium in which solute dissolves in (i.e water)
What is the factoid for Solubility?
The factors affecting solubility such as temperature, pressure, and the solvent.
What is the factoid for Solvents?
Water is known as the “universal solvent”, and can dissolve more substances than most liquids due to its molecular structure.
Solutes and Solvents in different states of matter
Gas in Gas
Gas in liquid
liquid in liquid
solid in solid
What is suspension?
A heterogenous mixture in which solutes do not dissolve and instead float freely within the medium.
What is Colloidal?
A heterogenous mixture in which the solute particles are evenly distributed within the solvents liquid phase.
