What is RRPC’s mandate (section 2 of the OACETT Act)
- To establish, maintain and conduct an institute or association within Ontario for technicians, engineering technicians, applied science technologists and engineering technologists for the purpose of granting membership and registration to persons who meet the standards of the Association.
- To maintain discipline among its members.
- To assist members in advancing their status, recognition, and welfare and in increasing their knowledge, skill, and proficiency.
- To establish and maintain consistent registration requirements for technicians, engineering technicians, applied science technologists, engineering technologists and other classes of members.

What are the two main categories of membership?
Certified Member - are those certified and registered as C.Techs and C.E.Ts
Associate Member - are those who are in training to become certified.
What are three additional membership categories administered by RPPC?
Fellow OACETT Members - highest designation. Certified members in good standing
Life Members - certified members recognized by the Council as having made an exceptional contribution to the Association
Non-Resident Members:
1. good standing; moved outside the province of Ontario and continuing to hold membership
2. from other provincial relating associations who choose to hold OACETT membership while living and retaining their original provincial association
3. international individuals who are working on completing requirements for certification or have successfully completed and have intention to move to Ontario

What are the four requirements for certification as an OACETT member?
- Be of good character.
- Be not less than eighteen years of age.
- Be ordinarily a resident of or employed in the Province of Ontario.
- Meet the criteria established in the by-laws of OACETT and in the RPPC rules.
What are the four criteria for certification as an OACETT member?
- Academic Credentials: The applicant’s academic credentials are assessed against
national standards for their field or a combination of standards, examinations and assigned courses, approved by IETO. - Professional Experience: The applicant must demonstrate a minimum of two years of appropriate work experience as an engineering technician or engineering technologist, as defined in IETO’s rules for certification.
- Professional References: The applicant must provide professional references as defined in IETO’s rules.
- Professional Practice Exam: The applicant must successfully complete the Professional Practice Exam on law, ethics and professional practice unless this requirement is otherwise waived.
What is PLAR?
PLAR stands for Prior Learning Assessment Recognition. Applicants who do not have full formal academic qualifications, but have significant experience greater than 10 years, and who may be able to demonstrate that they have achieved a standard of technical competence comparable to that of their peers, a Prior Learning Assessment Recognition process is available to meet some or all of the certification criteria.
Briefly describe the appeals process for certification.
- An appeal must be filed within thirty days of the notice of unsuccessful certification.
- The appeal must be filed in writing and be accompanied by the appropriate fee. The appeal should include the evidence upon which the appeal is based. The fee will be refunded if the appeal is successful.
- The appeal will be heard by the RPPC within ninety days after the appeal was received. The applicant appealing will receive two weeks’ notice of the date, time and location of the appeal hearing.
- After the hearing the RPPC will determine the outcome of the appeal through a majority vote.
What is FARPACTA?
Fair Access to Regulated Professions and Compulsory Trades Act, 2006. The provincial legislation that requires professional organizations and trades to have fair and transparent licensing and certification procedures.
What is the role of the Office of the Fairness Commissioner?
The Office of the Fairness Commissioner (OFC) is the body that is responsible for the implementation of FARPACTA, overseeing the professional licensing process of regulatory bodies and compulsory trades in Ontario.
What is the purpose of the professional member identification stamp?
The stamp establishes the member’s identity and his/her responsibility for the work bearing the stamp. Documents incl.:
- preliminary and final technical drawings
- preliminary and final reports
- lab analysis
- maps
- specifications
- design and field notes
- official field notes, official estimates, plans
- appraisals
- permits
What are things might members be censured for?
- Professional misconduct as defined in the Rules of Professional Conduct.
- Incompetence as an engineering technician or technologist.
- A breach of ethics as defined in The Code of Ethics.
- Failure to abide by mandatory CPD requirements
What are the possible actions of the Complaints Committee when a complaint against a member is received in writing?
- Direct the matter to the Discipline Committee.
- Direct the Registrar to provide advice to the member complained against.
- Issue a caution or admonishment to the member being complained against.
- Take any appropriate action that is consistent with the Act or the By-law.
What are the possible actions of the Discipline Committee when a member is found to be guilty of professional misconduct or incompetent?
- Revoke membership.
- Suspend membership.
- Impose specified terms, conditions or limitations on the member’s certification and
membership. - Reprimand, admonish or counsel the member.
- Have the findings and order published in The Ontario Technologist.
- Determine a fine to be paid by the member.
How can members resign their membership?
Members of OACETT may resign their membership by submitting their resignation in writing to the Registrar.
How many days of the decision by the Complaints/Discipline Committee may appeal?
Within 30 days of the decision being made. A Notice of Appeal must be made in writing and delivered to the Registrar. The Discipline Committee hears the appeal within ninety days of the NOA being given to the Registrar
