Define deviation from social norms
A
Any behaviour that does not follow accepted social patterns or social rules. Can be seen as abnormal and undesirable.

Disadvantages of using deviation from social norms as a definition of abnormality
A
- definition does not clearly indicate that a person has a psychological abnormality (i,e are they just eccentric or odd) therefore must be cautious when making judgements
- context must be taken into account e.g no clothes is considered abnormal but not at a nudist beach

A
- distinguishes between desirable and non desirable behaviour e.g. protect public from harmful effects of deviation from social norms
To highlight this behaviour is abnormal, can minimise this behaviour to protect public
