Module 1 Social Influence Obedience - L6 Flashcards
When was the Milgram study conducted?
1974
Why did milgram conduct variations of his original study?
- to determine which situational factors lead to high level of obedience and which reduce obedience
Which factors did milgram investigate
Proximity, location, uniform
Explain the proximity variation
Teacher and learner were seared in same room
Explain the touch proximity variation
Teacher had to force learners arm down onto metal plate to administer shocks
What were the obedience rates for the proximity variation, touch proximity variation and the absent experimenter variation.
Proximity = 40%
Touch proximity =30%
Absent expérimenter= 21%
Why did obedience levels fall in the proximity variation
Because teacher was able to experience mr Wallace’s anguish directly
Explain the absent experimenter variation
- Experimenter left the room after giving instructions and gave subsequent orders by phone
- majority gave lower voltages or missed out on shocks
Explain the alternative setting variation
Experiment carried out in rundown office by experimenter in casual clothes vs Yale with lab coat
Obedience rare of alternate setting variation
48%
Why does location affect obedience
Location of take gave them confidence in integrity of people involved
Explain the uniform variation
- in alternative setting variation, experimenter did not wear uniform (lab coat)
Why did uniform impact obedience
- uniforms= easily recognisable symbols of power and status (except uniforms like prisoners)
What was Bickmans experiment?
- 1974
- confederates asked passerby to pick up litter, dressed as guard, milkman or civilian
- guard= 90% obeyed
- civilian= 50% obeyed
