Module 2: Part 2 - Intermittent IV Medication Flashcards
How many mLs in a piggyback IV bag?
25-250mL
Where is a piggyback IV bag hung?
Higher than the primary infusing bag
Is a piggyback system macro or micro drip system?
Either!
Does the main line still infuse while the piggyback is going?
Nope
What is a back-check valve? Which bags have it?
This valve is in the port of the primary IV line, its purpose is to automatically stop the flow of the primary bag when the piggyback begins. It will open automatically when the piggyback is finished.
How does a mini-pump work?
This is a battery operated pump that is used to deliver small amounts of fluid
- We use it on the pediatric floor, no piggybacks there
What size bag does the mini-infusion pump require?
No bags are used for this, instead syringes are used
What must you always do prior to giving meds through an existing line?
Determine the compatibility of the med with IV fluids and any other additives within the IV solution.
Who prepares the piggyback and/or prefilled syringes?
Pharmacy
Within what range can you give non-time-critical medications?
1-2 hours
What should you keep in mind when giving IV fluids to pediatric patients?
They are more susceptible to alterations in fluid balance and are not able to adjust to the changes as quickly as an adult.
What should you keep in mind when giving IV fluids to gerontological patients?
(2)
They are at a higher risk for med toxicity and/or fluid overload
