Module 2-Midterm- Fluids Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the Body Fluid Compartments
A
Divided into 2 major compartments:
-Intracellular (everything inside the cell)
-Extracellular (everything outside the cell)
Extracellular compartment further divided into:
-Interstitial (directly outside, bathing cells)
-blood plasma (watery portion of blood)
2
Q
Body Fluid Compartment Portions
A
- for an average 70kg (154lbs) person, the total body water found in all compartments is 42L
- Intracellular contains 67% or 28L
- Extracellular contains 26.4% or 11L
- Plasma contains 6.6% or 3L
3
Q
Describe Plasma
A
- 92% water
- 8% proteins, ions, nutrients, gases, and waste
- colloidal solutions: components are suspended
- suspended substances include:
- proteins ( albumins, fibrinogen, globulins) - volume remains constant
- water intake through the digestive tract closely matches water loss from skin, kidneys, lungs, and digestive tract
4
Q
Chemical composition of Body Fluids
A
- big difference between ion composition between intracellular and extracellular
- minimal difference between ion concentration in plasma and interstitial fluid
