Module 2 - C2 - Atoms, Ions and Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
What is the relative mass and charge of a proton, neutron and electron?
A
Proton - 1 - 1
Neutron - 1 - 0
Electron - 1/1836 - -1
2
Q
What are ions and isotopes?
A
Ions - charged particles that have lost electrons (have a positive charge and are cations) or gained electrons ( have a negative charge and are anions).
Isotopes - Atoms of the same element but with a different amount of neutrons
3
Q
Define atomic number, mass number and relative atomic mass
A
atomic number(Z) - number of protons mass number (A) - number of protons + neutrons relative atomic mass - The weighted mass of an atom of an element relative to 1/12th the mass of a Carbon-12 atom
