Q

Runway

A

A defined rectangular area on a land aerodrome prepared for the LDG and TKOF run of ACFT.

NB: Instrument RWY intended for the operation of ACFT using instrument approach procedures (precision and non-precision). Non-instrument RWY intended for the operation of ACFT using visual approach procedures.

Q

Runway Shoulder

A

An area adjacent to the edge of a pavement so prepared as to provide transition between the pavement and adjacent surfaces.

RWY shoulders should be provided for RWYs less than 60m wide.

RWY shoulders mitigate hazards to ACFT running off the RWY or avoid ingestion of loose stones or other objects by turbine engines.

Q

Runway Threshold

A

The beginning of that portion of the RWY usable for landing.

NB: Can also be displaced due to obstacles located near the THR.

Q

Runway End Safety Areas (RESA)

A

An area symmetrical about the extended RWY centreline and adjacent to the end of the strip, intended to reduce the risk of damage to an aeroplane undershooting or overrunning the RWY.

Q

Stopway

A

A defined rectangular area on the ground at the end of the TORA prepared as a suitable area in which an ACFT can be stopped in the event of an abandoned TKOF.

17
Q

Clearway

A

A defined rectangular area on the ground or water, selected or prepared as a suitable area over which an aeroplane may make a portion of its initial climb to a specified height.

NB: Extends 75m either side of RWY centreline with a MAX upward gradient of 1.25% and shall not exceed 50% of TORA.
