Module 2 Flashcards
What are electric forces?
According to atomic theory, electric forces between atoms and molecules hold them together to form liquids and solids.
What is the law of conservation of electric charge?
no net electric charge can be created or destroyed
What happens is a positively charged object is brought close to a neutral metal rod but not touch it?
Free electrons do not leave the neutral metal rod, instead they move within the metal toward the external positive charged at the opposite end of the rod. Therefore the charge has been induced at the two ends. The net charge on the metal rod is still zero
What is another to induce a net charge on a metal object?
connect it with a conducting wire to the ground
Why is a conducting wire grounded?
The earth is so large and can conduct, easily accepts or gives up electrons
What happens when a charged object is brought close to a metal object grounded?
free electrons in the metal are repelled and many of them move down the wire into the Earth. Leaving metal positively charged.
What happens if the wire is cut after the negative object is moved when a charged object is brought close to a metal object grounded?
the electrons would all have moved from the ground back into the metal object and it would be neutral again
How is charge seperation done in nonconductors?
If a positively charged object is brought close to a neutral nonconductor, almost no electrons can move about freeely within the nonconductor. But they can move slightly within their own atoms and moelucles.
What happens if charge on either one of the objects is doubled?
The force is doubled.
What happens if charge of both objects is doubled?
the force increases to four times the original
What happens when the distance between the objects is increased? (doubled)
the force decreased with the square of the distance between them. If it is doubled the force would decrease to one fourth of its original value
What creates a current in electromagnetic induction? (2)
changing magnetic flux through a loop induces an emf or voltage
induced by moving a conductor in a magnetic field
The fast the magnetic movement…..
the larger the current
What does the direction of magnetic motion determine?
the direction of induced current
What happens when a magnet is moving towards a coil?
the B-> in the coil increases and the current is in the clockwise direction
