module 2 Flashcards
1
Q
compartmentalization of the cell interior is advantageous to eukaryotic cells
A
Eukaryotic cells have an organized cytoskeleton
Compartmentalization allows for discrete areas within the eukaryotic cell for specialized processes
2
Q
components of a virion
A
Virion- a complete/ mature virus particle, it is the form of the virus that can exist outside the cell and infect new cells
3
Q
Prions
A
interacting with particles of the same protein in altered conformation
4
Q
Satellite nucleic acids
A
Also nucleic acids that need helper virus for replication
The difference is that they don’t encode capsid proteins
5
Q
how oncoviruses cause cancer
A
cause cancer by inducing uncontrolled cell growth
- viral DNA integrates into host genome, disrupting genes
- viral proteins directly stimulate cell (rapid increase in numbers)
- long term infection causes inflammation, leading to DNA damage
- some viruses evade immune protections, allowing prolonged infection and mutation accumulation
