Ambulate
to move from place to place; walk
Dangle
popular term for the first movement a patient is allowed, either after surgery under general anesthesia, or ‘under local’, in which the recuperee allows the feet to dangle over the side of the bed
Fowler’s Position
semi-sitting position (45-60 degrees) and may have knees either bent or straight. high Fowler, 90 degrees and semi-Fowler, 30 to 45 degrees; and low Fowler, where the head is slightly elevated.
Gait Belt
belt that goes around the patient waist, you grab onto it with your hands to either help them go from chair to chair, or walk. Helps prevent back injury for the user.
Lateral Position
Position in which the patient is lying on their side.
Prone Position
person lies flat with the chest down and the back up.
Sliding Board/Transfer board
use with gait belts, instead of lifting and pivoting you slide their butts across to chair to chair . Lock wheelchair brakes
Supine Position
lying on back
Trapeze
bar above bed that can be grabed by patient to move around
Trendelenburg
position in which the patient has the head lower than the feet.
Weight Bearing
Having the ability to stand on one or both legs
WRMD
Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorder
A group of painful disorders of muscles, tendons, and nerves. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, thoracic outlet syndrome, and tension neck syndrome are examples.
Abscess
collection of pus in the tissues of the body, normally caused by bacteria
